Purpose

Criteria
To receive the Felicia Brewer Opportunity Scholarship, a student must:
-Have attended a Chapel Hill - Carrboro City Schools district high school for a minimum of one school year, or be scheduled to complete a minimum of one year at the end of the current academic year.
-Be a high school graduate or scheduled to become a high school graduate in the year of the application, or have completed and received a GED.
-Be an immigrant to the United States who came to the country with or without parents or a first generation United States citizen of immigrant parents or guardians. Applicants may be documented or undocumented immigrants.
-Have overcome significant adversity to pursue educational goals. Examples of adversity include but are not limited to: escaping a dangerous life from home country, torture, learning English as a second language, poverty, being required by parents or guardians to work to help support the family, abuse in the family, substance abuse, physical or mental handicaps.
-Demonstrate financial need through financial information documentation.
-Provide a completed Felicia Brewer Opportunity Scholarship application and required forms and paperwork.
-Have been accepted into an accredited college, university, community college, or trade school.

Please Note:
-Students currently attending a college or university for undergraduate studies, community college, or trade school who meet all other criteria are eligible to apply.
-Applicants may be documented or undocumented immigrants.
-Students studying in the US as part of an exchange program or the children of parents in an exchange program are not eligible.

National Youth Science Camp

Two high school seniors have the opportunity of a lifetime - participation
in the National Youth Science Camp (NYSC). Please encourage your students to
consider applying for this program. The deadline is February 17, 2012.

The students receive a full scholarship to exchange ideas with scientists
and other professionals from the academic and corporate worlds. The nearly
month-long experience includes lectures and hands-on research projects
presented by scientists from across the nation; overnight expeditions into
the National Forest; and a visit to Washington D.C. The selected delegates
must not only demonstrate academic achievement in science, but also show
potential for thoughtful scientific leadership.

The NYSC experience is offered at no cost to its participants so that
selected delegates may attend regardless of their financial status.
Educational and recreational programming, as well as meals, lodging, and
round-trip air passage on scheduled airlines are provided free of charge.

Delegates arrive in Charleston, West Virginia, on Thursday, June 27, 2012,
and depart on Sunday, July 21, 2012. The NYSC is held near Bartow in the
eastern mountains of West Virginia, within the Monongahela National Forest.

MIT Summer Program

MIT (Massachussetts Institute of Technology) is sponsoring a summer program called MITES: Minority Introduction To Engineering & Science. Selected students participate in the program on full scholarship. Participants only have to provide their transportation to and from the program.

Students will take courses in calculus, physics, and humanities. They will also take a course in biology, biochemistry, or chemistry, and an elective course in genomics, programming, electronics, or engineering design. The MITES program also gives its participants the chance to experience a few once in a lifetime activities. For example, admission dinners with members of the MIT admissions officers, a college fair with representatives from top universities, field trips to nearby attractions, socials, and barbeques.

NIEHS Summer Internship Program

The Summer Internship Program (SIP) at the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)provides an opportunity to spend a summer working at the NIEHS side-by-side with some of the leading scientists in the world, in an environment devoted exclusively to environmental health research. Interns will work on a research project that entails exposure to the latest biochemical, molecular, and analytical techniques, while investigating environmental health issues. We are currently hiring high school sophomores, juniors and seniors who have a passion for learning and are committed to helping their peers. We are looking for students who can serve as mentors for their students, while also having the opportunity to build useful job experience for college resumes (see our P2P College Placement data here!). You will have the flexibility of choosing a schedule that is convenient for you and as well as selecting which subjects you would like to tutor. Compensation for this position starts at $12 per hour and an increase to $15 per hour is available after your 30th hour worked.

Primary Responsibilities

1. Provide timely, competent tutoring services to assigned students in designated subject areas.

2. Form and sustain appropriate relationship with student and their parents.

3. Prepare for each student session by organizing any additional resource material and demonstrates good time management techniques.

The Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship for full-time 2012 DTCC students

The Sallie Southall Cotten Scholarship (SSCS) is awarded to an outstanding high school senior (male or female). The student from an accredited school in North Carolina must be sponsored by a Federated club in good standing with GFWC-NC. This means that students interested in applying should contact a club in their area to find out about the process the club uses to select the student it will sponsor, including the deadline for applications. In addition, please note that GFWC-NC will only award this scholarship to a student choosing to attend a college or university in North Carolina. Local winners compete at the district contest which is typically held at the district Arts Festival, and the district winners then compete at the state level for the SSCS which is currently $6,000 per year for four years, for a total of $24,000. In addition, the state runner-up shall receive a one-time award of $3,000, the second runner-up shall receive a one-time award of $2,000, and the remaining contestants shall receive a one-time-award of $1,000. All monies are sent to the school of the student's choice, usually in August. For the scholarship winner GFWC-NC Headquarters will send checks twice a year after notification from the SSCS Chairman upon receipt of semester grades and updated student information.

The following is the judging criteria for the SSCS:

Investments of the GFWC-NC SSCS fund shall provide the scholarship monies and expenses incurred in awarding the scholarship. Recently, several representatives from ASUT met with the Director, Maureen Cullins, of the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) at Duke University. During the Summer of 2012, Duke will be piloting a six-week day program for rising college sophomores and juniors who are interested in the field of medicine.

This is an excellent opportunity for students who are interested in becoming doctors or dentists or public health administrators. Students must have a overall GPA of 2.5, and be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa.

Other criteria include:
* Identifies with a group that is racially/ethnically underrepresented in medicine (SMDEP defines this as African American, Native American, or Hispanic)
* Come from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background (SMDEP allows students to describe their background)
* Demonstrate an interest in issues affected under-served populations

Henry Wells Scholars Program:

Henry Wells Scholars are selected annually in recognition of academic excellence and outstanding scholastic achievement. As named scholars, students receive a $20,000 per year scholarship, a guaranteed internship or related experience during the January intersession of their freshman year, and a $3,000 stipend to support an internship, research, or related experiential learning opportunity. Scholars are eligible to use their stipend upon achieving junior standing for any option that fulfills the Experiential Learning requirement (see outline on p. 30 of college handbook) so long as the activity involves a minimum of six weeks (240 hours). In addition, Wells will pay the reasonable cost of transportation to visit campus for a special celebration in honor of the Henry Wells Scholars traditionally held in the early spring.

Scholarships For Leaders Program:

Wells College also offers Scholarships For Leaders with awards valued at $18,000 per year. The Admissions Office selects candidates at the time of acceptance based on academic achievement and leadership ability.

The Fred M. Alford Memorial Scholarship
Wake Electric will award one scholarship of $2,000. Requirements for the Fred M. Alford Memorial Scholarship include:
 Must be a child of or under legal guardianship of a Wake Electric member or live in a home served by Wake Electric
 Must be a high school graduating senior (cannot already be attending college)
 Must pursue a four-year undergraduate baccalaureate degree at an accredited institution in North Carolina

This scholarship is in memory of former Wake Electric employee Fred M. Alford. Youchstone Energy® Scholarships. Several scholarships of up to $1,250 will be awarded. Requirements include:

SAT Prep Class

Holy Cross Family and Parish Life Committee will host a SAT Prep class on Saturday, December 10th from 8 AM to 6 PM. Life Gets Better Scholarship
Incoming freshmen designated National Achievement, Hispanic, or Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Corporation, having a 3.50 high school GPA and having a 1950 on the SAT or 29 on the ACT. Tuition and fees, room, board, books, $500/semester sti-pend, internships and a laptop will be awarded. Awardee must major in Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Engineering, Envi-ronmental Science, Mathematics or Physics in order to be eligible for this scholarship. Students must take the PSAT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test) in the junior year of high school to compete in the National Merit Corporation programs.

Distinguished Scholar Award
Incoming freshmen who have scores of at least 1800 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT and a 3.50 high school GPA.
Out-of –State students receive a four-year scholarship that pays for tuition and fees. A National Achievement Semifinalist will receive double occupancy room rate and board. Students who are Pell Grant eligible will receive a stipend not to exceed $500/semester.

A National Achievement Finalist will also receive a laptop. A National Achievement Scholar will receive a laptop, $500/semester for books and a $500/semester stipend.

Duke Health Professions Program

The Duke University School of Medicine is searching for motivated minority high school students (9th-12th) in Durham to participate in its Health Professions Recruitment Exposure Program (HPREP).

HPREP is an enrichment program that targets underrepresented high school students interested in the life sciences with the aim of providing these students with the opportunity to interact with medical students, faculty and health professionals. The Program consists of 9 three-hour seminars, approximately 2 Saturdays per month, between January and April. During this time, students will hear lectures on different issues in medicine, participate in hands-on group activities and discussions, and attend workshops on college essay writing and interviewing.

Susan G. Komen Scholarship

Is now accepting applications for the $10,000 scholarships through November 15, 2011. These awards aid college students facing significant financial burdens due to the loss of a parent (or guardian) to breast cancer or their own breast cancer diagnosis at age 25 or younger.

The scholarship awards $10,000 per year (for up to four years) to a student to attend a state university in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. Komen scholarship recipients are selected based on scholastic achievement, community service, financial need and demonstrated leadership potential. Governor’s School is a wonderful summer opportunity available to gifted and talented rising high school juniors and seniors in the state of North Carolina. It is a residential program lasting six weeks at either Salem College in Winston-Salem or Meredith College in Raleigh. Students are nominated in specific areas of study: Social Science, Natural Science, Mathematics, Foreign Language (Spanish or French), English, Art, Choral Music, Dance, Theatre and Instrumental Music based on End-of-Course examination scores.

Durham Public Schools is covering the $500.00 it costs for each student who is selected and attends Governor’s School.

In order to qualify to apply for Governor's School, you must have scored at or above the 92nd percentile in an End-of-Course examination, or a list of approved achievement tests.

William Peace College

William Peace University (formerly Peace College) was founded in 1857 and located in the heart of Raleigh, North Carolina. WPU is a liberal arts and sciences university offering four-year baccalaureate degrees in a variety of programs. William Peace University remains a private school but has expanded to allow men to also apply and attend the university.

Attention juniors:
The PSAT test is now being offered for free to registered Middle College High School juniors. If you've already dropped off your money you can stop by and pick up your payment. We encourage all juniors to take this exam to prepare for your SAT exam, especially since it's free. You'll need to be in room 451 of the Newton building promptly at 8:00 am.

There are two-25 minute critical reading sections with 48 questions, two 25-minute mathematics sections with 38 questions and one 30-minute writing skills section with 39 questions.

Relationship Violence Program

DPS Student Services is collaborating with the community to help our youth (16 - 24 years old, females/males) of Durham understand and familiarize themselves with the signs of relationship violence. It is critical for our youth and families to know the resources available for assistance, if needed in the Durham community. Therefore, there will be a Relationship Violence Program on Saturday, October 22, 2011 from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the Hayti Heritage Center on 804 Old Fayetteville Street, Durham, NC 27701.

Based on the recent deaths of three young females in Durham, the educational program will have a host of community advocates and leaders helping with this initiative. If the murders happened on a college campus or when school was in session, there would be counselors and grief support for teens and young adults. However, due to the time and circumstances of the murders there are youth who are handling this tragedy alone and have raw emotions without tools to address them.

US Army Recruitment

Representatives from the US Army will offer the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) to Middle College students on Wednesday, October 5th from 12:30-4:30 in 945 Tech Building. Your ASVAB results will tell you which branches of the military you are eligible to join, which careers within the military you are eligible to pursue, and whether or not you are eligible for enlistment bonuses. (Note: Taking the test does not commit you to joining the military.)

More information about the ASVAB, including practice questions, are available at www.military.com/ASVAB. Students who wish to participate should sign up with Mr. Evans or Ms. Barillari by Friday, September 30th. You can be excused from high school courses in order to participate.

Planned Parenthood is recruiting "Teen Educators" to serve as sources of accurate health information for their peers. Interested students are required to participate in twelve weekly training sessions and will be compensated up to $300. Training sessions will cover topics such as Communication & Relationships, Reproductive Anatomy & Physiology, Abstinence and Contraception, Gender Identity & Sexual Orientation, Sexual Violence, Mental Health, and Substance Abuse. Stagville Under the Stars

Let's Talk: A Workshop for Parents/Guardians and Teens

Durham Crisis Response Center is sponsoring two workshop series which will incorporate an evidence-based curriculum to reduce the risk of dating violence and improve parent-teen communication. The workshops will be three to five sessions that last about 2 hours each.

Durham County Teen Court

Durham County Teen Court is looking for youth and adult volunteers. Teen Court is an alternative court that gives misdemeanor offenders a second chance. It is a real court within the Juvenile Justice System but it is run by youth volunteers.

Volunteers are needed to play the roles of attorney, bailiff, juror, courtroom clerk, sketch artist, courtroom monitor, jury monitor, check in monitor, and exit interviewer. (Volunteers will be trained on how to perform each role.)

Those interested in volunteering should attend a training session on May 21 from 9:00-12:00 at the TQ Business Complex, located at 212 North Cororan Street in Durham (27701).
