Exploring Historically Black Colleges and Universities
Many prominent black Americans attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). You may already know that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., attended Morehouse College, and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall attended Lincoln University and Howard University. But did you also know that the following also attended an HBCU:
- Spike Lee: Film director, actor; Morehouse
- Julius Chambers: Lawyer, civil rights leader; NC Central
- Toni Morrison: Writer, Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize winner; Howard
- Samuel Jackson: Actor, producer; Morehouse
- Rev. Jesse Jackson: Politician, civil rights leader; NC A&T State
- Marian Wright Edelman: Founder/president of the Children’s Defense Fund; Spelman
- Langston Hughes: Writer; Lincoln
Those wanting to learn more the history and experience of attending an HBCU can join us for Transfer Connections on Tuesday, Nov. 13, in the Wynn Center, Building 10, Multipurpose Room.

- 3:15 p.m.: Panel discussion of Durham Tech faculty and former students who have attended an HBCU
- After panel ends: HBCU college fair featuring: North Carolina Central University; St. Augustine’s College; North Carolina State A&T University; Winston-Salem State University; and Livingstone College.
