5th Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) College Fair

The 5 th Annual Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) College Fair will be held in Raleigh, North Carolina, Saturday, September 21, 2019 from 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM on the campus of Needham Broughton High School in the Holiday Gymnasium. Last year, this FREE College Fair brought over 325 students together to learn about a variety of HBCUs! There will be  workshops and informational sessions on “Paying for College”, “The College Experience” featuring a panel of recent HBCU graduates, and our new program College Admissions Process (CAP).

UNC Chapel Hill Project Uplift

Project Uplift  is a summer enrichment and college access program designed to promote and increase access to higher education for all outstanding students, especially those underrepresented in post-secondary education. Every year, during May and June, approximately 1,000 high school seniors participate in one of four separate Project Uplift sessions. During this two-day experience, Project Uplift participants live on Carolina’s campus, interacting with faculty, staff and current students, participating in educational, cultural and social activities. Project Uplift Scholars have the opportunity to immerse themselves in college life and experience the academic rigor and social climate of a four-year institution. For 50 years, Project Uplift has consistently provided a diverse selection of rising high school seniors from across the state of North Carolina with an opportunity to live, lead, and learn about the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a first-hand basis. UNC Chapel Hill High School Volunteer Program

Each summer the High School Volunteer Program runs for a period of eight weeks. We offer volunteer positions for high school students in Chapel Hill and  UNC Health Care Hillsborough Campus  sites. Student volunteers will be impacted through meaningful experiences and gain valuable job skills right here in our community. Chapel Hill offers exposure to a large academic hospital environment; the Hillsborough Campus maintains a community feel while having the same quality of providers and care. Exploring Historically Black Colleges and Universities

Many prominent black Americans attended Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). You may already know that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., attended Morehouse College, and Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall attended Lincoln University and Howard University.  But did you also know that the following also attended an HBCU:   Spike Lee: Film director, actor; Morehouse Julius Chambers: Lawyer, civil rights leader; NC Central Toni Morrison: Writer, Pulitzer Prize and Nobel Prize winner; Howard Samuel Jackson: Actor, producer; Morehouse Rev. Durham Tech Fall Fest & College Fair

Along with food, games, and music, Fall Fest will feature four-year university admissions counselors ready to answer your transfer questions. Representatives will be from: Campbell University UNC Wilmington North Carolina State Meredith College UNC Charlotte North Carolina Central Fayetteville State Elon Fall Fest will be  Wed., Oct. 24, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. , on the Main Campus Plaza. If you can’t attend or have more questions, the Transfer College Fair will be  Wed., Oct. 31, from noon to 1:45 p.m.  in the Collins Building (Building 2) foyer. There will be a total of 30 colleges represented, including the ones from Fall Fest,  UNC Chapel Hill and UNC’s School of Nursing, UNC Asheville, UNC Greensboro, NC A&T, Appalachian State, ECU, and Western Carolina .

UNC Greensboro Campus Visit

A representative from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro will be on campus to meet with students on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at 9:30am. Interested students should come to room 9-104. Please keep in mind that I can excuse you from your high school classes, but I cannot excuse you from college classes. Please have permission from your high school teacher before attending. All interested students are encouraged to attend!

Free ACT/SAT Test Prep Sessions

RE: Academic Assistance with Durham Tech Classes

Dear Students: Ms. Navarro has asked me to follow up with any student who experienced difficulty in their Durham Tech classes last semester, and I will be contacting each of you individually in the next two weeks. However, I thought it would be useful for ALL OF YOU to be aware of academic support resources available to you through Durham Tech's Center for Academic Excellence. If you are struggling in one or more of your college classes, I strongly recommend the following: 1.  Talk with your college instructor and find out when he/she holds office hours.  Getting to know your instructor and receiving 1:1 assistance is always valuable. 2. The Center for Academic Excellence offers a schedule for drop-in tutoring in various subjects. Their schedule is available in the mail-box outside Ms. Brown's office (Bldg. 4, Rm. 121) 3.
