Free Speech Essay Scholarship

High school juniors and seniors for the 2017-2018 school year are eligible to participate in  FIRE's essay contest. To enter, students must submit an essay between 800 and 1,000 words on the provided topic. One $10,000 first prize, one $5,000 second prize, and three $1,000 runner-up prizes will be awarded for the best essays. Four $500 winners will be chosen from the remaining entrants in a drawing. FIRE will accept essay contest entries through December 31, 2017. Winners will be notified by January 31, 2018. To enter visit thefire.org/contest .

Dartmouth College Informational Presentation

Students interested in learning more about Dartmouth College are invited to attend an upcoming presentation. Please visit dartgo.org/ontheroad  for more information and to RSVP. AcademicWorks Scholarships

AcademicWorks is Durham Tech's online scholarship portal that contains a list of Durham Tech and external scholarship opportunities. Students should fill out the FAFSA first then log in to apply using their Durham Tech username and password. Click here for more information. This will be available during the spring semester and is only for seniors who plan to attend Durham Tech next year.

The Optical Shop

The Optical Shop serves all DTCC employees and students, providing low-cost eyewear. You must provide a written prescription from an eye doctor to order prescription glasses and sunglasses. Savings are approximately 40-50% over retail optical shops. Visit 1-143 to learn more.

Campus Harvest Food Pantry

The Durham Tech Food Pantry is available to anyone with a valid Durham Tech ID. You may visit once per week to receive a bag of food. Snacks are also available on a daily basis. Other personal supplies may be available depending upon donations. Pantry items are located in 3-110C on Main Campus and the lobby front desk at the Orange County Campus.

DTCC Career Services Center

Career Services staff offer resource materials, interest inventories, workshops, career fairs, and individual counseling to help students develop and clarify career goals. Services are available to Durham Tech students and alumni. Visit 10-209C to learn more.

Spring College Course Registration

Registration for spring college courses will begin at the end of October. In order to prepare, all students should submit course requests for Mr. Evans to review using their Self-Service accounts. New students should have reviewed this already in their ACA course and returning students should already be familiar with the process. Those who need an individual advising session will have the opportunity to sign up to see Mr. Evans next month. See the dates below to determine your registration date. DACA Renewal Scholarships

Need to renew your DACA status? If so, you may be eligible for a $495 scholarship towards DACA payment. You must have an EAD Card (work permit) with an expiration date of March 5, 2018 or sooner. Click here to apply for the scholarship. DACA renewal applications are due by October 4th.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship

Deadline: Tuesday, 11/14/17 Application :  http://www.jkcf.org/scholarship-programs/college-scholarship/how-to-apply/ Eligibility: Senior standing – Plan to graduate from a U.S. high school in spring 2018. Fall College Enrollment – Intend to enroll in an accredited four-year college beginning in fall 2018. GPA – cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above. Test Scores – Receive standardized test scores in the top 15%: SAT combined critical reading and math score of 1200 or above and/or ACT composite score of 26 or above. Income – Demonstrate significant unmet financial need. We will consider applicants with family income up to $95,000. However, we anticipate that a majority of scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive a Pell grant.

Reminder: Duke and The University of Miami on campus TOMORROW!

This is a reminder that representatives from the Duke University as well as The University of Miami will be on campus tomorrow, September 21, 2017 at 1:00 and 1:45pm respectively. Students interested in one or both of these schools can come by the ERC Verizon Conference Room. This is located in building 5, across the hall from the library. I will provide a pass for missing time from a high school class, but I cannot excuse you from your college classes, so please plan accordingly. 2018 Golden Door Scholarship for DACA students APPLY NOW!

Golden Door Scholars provides scholarships for DACA students and scholarships for undocumented students. Students may be high school seniors or recent graduates. Preference will be given to high school graduates from states, such as North Carolina, that require undocumented students to pay out-of-state tuition . The deadline for applications is 10/25/2017 . Teen Connections Peer Education Program at Planned Parenthood

This is a really great opportunity for you to apply to Planned Parenthood’s Teen Connections program, which is starting in Durham in October. It’s a peer education and leadership program, where local teens learn about sexual health, relationships, consent, and other topics, and then learn how to share that information with their peers. Food is provided AND participants can earn a $300 stipend upon completion of the program. It would also look great on college applications! Teen Connections gives teens the tools they need to teach their peers about sexual health, healthy relationships, consent, preventing teen pregnancy, and HIV/STI risk reduction. Service Academy Day

Are you interested in a guaranteed job after graduation? Would you like to receive a monthly salary while obtaining your graduation? How does traveling the world while serving your county sound? Service Academy Day will be held at North Carolina State University on September 23, 2017 from 10:00am-1:00pm (please arrive at 10am). This event is intended to provide students and their families with an opportunity to meet with representatives from each service academy: US Naval Academy, US Merchant Marine Academy, US Coast Guard Academy, US Military Academy at West Point and the US Air Force Academy. You may ask questions about the the nomination process and meet one-on-one with staff. The Service Academy Day is a valuable resource that will help with the application process. Park, Morehead Cain and Levine Scholarships

Seniors interested in the Park Scholarship at NCSU, the Morehead Cain Scholarship at UNC Chapel Hill or the Levine Scholarship at UNC Charlotte should submit your resume along with a 1 paragraph statement on why you feel you should be nominated for one (or more) or these scholarships to Mrs. Brown via email by no later than Monday, September 11 at 5:00pm. The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship-Full Scholarship at UNC-CH

The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship is beginning its seventeenth year at Carolina.  Our scholarship for full undergraduate support for student writers will open its fifteenth submission period as follows:  The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship will receive applications beginning September 1 st , 2017 .  The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship application process involves two (2) steps :              Step 1)  an application to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill by October 15 th , 2017 ; and, Step 2)  an application to the Thomas Wolfe Scholarship by November 15 th , 2017.   S tudents must apply to both the University and the Scholarship to be considered.  Preliminary screening will be completed in January, 2017, with final screening concluding in early March, 2017.  Three outstanding candidates will be brought to the UNC-Chapel Hill campus for interviews, and a final decision will be made ...

NTC brings together diverse Durham high school students weekly to discuss contemporary social issues related to the art at the Nasher Museum. The program connects high school students with local artists and museum professionals, and provides opportunities for students to work on collaborative projects with each other and the Durham community.
