Health Professions Recruitment Exposure Program

The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is an organization dedicated to addressing the needs and promoting the educational potential of the underserved. SNMA has several pipeline programs dedicated to this aim.

The SNMA chapter of Duke University School of Medicine is searching for motivated minority high school students (9th-12th grades) in Durham to participate in its Health Professions Recruitment Exposure Program (HPREP). HPREP is an enrichment program that targets underrepresented high school students interested in the life sciences with the aim of providing these students with the opportunity to interact with medical students, faculty and health professionals. The Program consists of 9 three-hour seminars, approximately 2-3 Saturdays per month, between February and May. During this time, students will hear lectures on different issues in medicine, participate in hands-on group activities and discussions, and attend workshops on college essay writing and interviewing. Participants will also be required to prepare and deliver an oral Power Point presentation on a topic relevant to medicine. Each student will have an opportunity to participate in a mock college interview as well as exposure to health professionals in their area of interest. In addition, all students are invited to attend our annual SNMA Martin Luther King banquet typically held in the end of January. There is a scholarship awarded to three students for outstanding performance at the end of the program. To remain eligible for the scholarship and maintain active participation in HPREP students must not miss more than three (3) sessions.
