Duke HPREP DukeMed Pipeline program

The aim of this program is to provide additional foundation and experience for those students interested in pursuing a career in the health professions. Our program features medical students and members of the Student National Medical Association (SNMA), as well as minority professional faculty who will give lectures and interact with participants, providing essential role models and interaction opportunities rarely experienced by the underrepresented high school student. The exposure to the educational institution and hospitals allows the student to envision him/herself in a similar setting six to seven years from now and encourages him/her to overcome the academic challenges and hurdles encountered along the way. The counseling and interaction with successful medical students will also help the high school students avoid the academic pitfalls suffered by many talented high school students in their first year of college.

Program Goals:

- To increase the awareness of underrepresented and minority high school students of opportunities available in the health professions.
- To increase the number of minorities and underrepresented students entering the health professions, allied health fields, and graduate sciences.
- To facilitate interactions between underrepresented high school students, medical students and faculty at medical institutions.
- To increase high school student awareness of the unique healthcare needs of minority and economically disadvantaged communities.
-     To strengthen high school student motivation to pursue a career in the sciences via creative, intellectual, and sociocultural mechanisms.
- To counsel serious college-bound minority and underrepresented high school students on college survival skills and the premedical curriculum.
