James M. Schooler Sr. African American Male Scholarship
Beta Theta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
established the James M. Schooler Sr. African American Male Scholarship as one of our many avenues
designed to assist young men in Durham and Orange County to assist in attending college. The award is
named in honor of Dr. James M. Schooler, Sr., who dedicated many years of service to the youth in the
Durham Community and was a charter member of the Beta Theta Lambda Chapter. This $1000.00
scholarship offers African-American males who are planning to enroll in college during the 2018- 2019
academic year an opportunity to compete for this award. Qualified students must have satisfactory
grades, exhibit leadership, and be of high moral character. A personal interview may be considered to
make a determination the need for final award selections.

- Completed typed or neatly printed application form and resume.
- An Official Sealed Transcript.
- Two (2) Endorsements and letters of Recommendation (one must be from a school counselor or official).
- An Essay of not more than 500 words but not less than 300 words on one of the following topics.
- How you would work to bring about the end of intolerance to promote a world where we are judged by character, not by color?
- What you can do to encourage other African-American males to complete high school and go to college?
